Franz Bischoff succeeded in becoming one of California’s greatest painters. Although one can not claim him as a native Californian, he settled in Pasadena in 1908 and for the next twenty-one years produced his finest body of works.
Franz Bischoff’s early works, prior to 1920, were painted in softer, more muted color harmonies than those painted later. Mums, a watercolor on paper demonstrates Bischoff’s mastery of floral painting. His application of color with each brush stroke is spectacular, perfectly capturing the hard and soft edges of the blooms. This early work can be related to his success as a porcelain painter. Bischoff had opened his own teaching school of ceramic art in New York City and Detroit. In his studio, he formulated many of his own ceramic colors. He became a celebrated East Coast china painter, and earned the reputation as “King of the Rose Painters”.
The art critics often noted Franz Bischoff as a superb colorist and his floral works depicting Roses or Mums have always been highly sought after.
