Hanson Duvall Puthuff traveled to paint in the Sierras, the Grand Canyon, Palm Springs, the Arizona desert, and Mexico; however, most of his paintings were done near the hills and mountains of his home.  He lived all over Southern California, in Eagle Rock, La Crescenta, Corona del Mar, and La Canada.  The painting, From My Terrace, depicts a typical scene in La Canada: a blue-gray mountain range diffused with an atmospheric haze, which sits behind a lush foreground of colorful vegetation.  He was known for his lyrical landscapes and peaceful compositions.  Arthur Millier said of Puthuff: “Here is a painter who has these many years identified himself with landscapes adjacent to Los Angeles and has been able to limit his field without stereotyping his work, which retains its freshness and sincerity.”

Puthuff was active in the art community.  With the writer Antony Anderson, he founded the Art Students League of Los Angeles.  He was also the co-founder of the California Art Club and the Laguna Beach Art Association.  He belonged to the Los Angeles Watercolor Society, the Painters and Sculptors Club of Los Angeles, the Berkeley League of Fine Arts, the Pasadena Society of Artists, the San Francisco Art Association, the Palette and Chisel Club of Chicago, the Salmagundi Club of New York, and the Southern States Art League.
