Oaks at Mesa Grande was painted in the early 1920s at the apex of Braun's career. Braun first painted Mesa Grande in 1920, and continued to visit this glorious location throughout his lifetime. Oaks at Mesa Grande is an exceptional painting, displaying tranquility in the vast open countryside. The spring grasses, blue mountains, and golden sunshine intrigued Braun, and he was able to give the viewer a sense of harmony and peacefulness on this splendid California day. Maurice Braun created a visual masterwork in Oaks at Mesa Grande. This painting is far superior in technique and quality than his works produced toward the end of his career.
The 1920s were a time of travel for Braun. He visited Colorado, Utah, Missouri, and New York. His paintings were favorably compared to those of Chauncy Rider (1868-1949). At the peak of his career, Braun won a $2,000 award at the Witte Museum of Art, San Antonio, Texas. The 1920s were also a time when he created several large canvases of the California landscape. This talented artist made his mark among his peers throughout the United States, but especially in Southern California as San Diego's most prominent painter.
