| John Carl Doemling |
Painter. Born in Wuerzburg, Bavaria about 1892. Doemling spent his early years in a local seminary in preparation to becoming a priest; however, by age twelve he had opted to pursue an art career. He studied art in Wuerzburg and, while in his teens, left home and supported himself by restoring paintings in churches and monasteries in Switzerland, Italy, and France. IN 1911 he immigrated to Chicago where he found work as a letterer for the Pullman Car Company while studying at the Chicago Art Institute. There he became an active member of the Palette and Chisel Club. During the 1920s he made many trips to art colonies throughout the U.S. including Los Angeles and Laguna Beach. In 1927, he had plans to take up permanent residence in Laguna Beach where he was a member of the local art association.
