Granville Redmond (1875-1935)

Granville Redmond was a remarkable man in every way.  His admirable reputation as a masterful artist during his lifetime and today is indisputable.  Redmond’s paintings are revered by art critics and considered ultimate treasures for collectors.  He was a man with depth and many diverse interests whose charismatic personality attracted many celebrated friends.  It is astonishing that Redmond accomplished so much in spite of a hearing disability.  Redmond could not hear from the age of two when he became hearing impaired after suffering from scarlet fever.  He was encouraged to pursue his artistic talents by Theophilus d’Estrella (1851-1929) who taught Redmond painting, drawing, and pantomime at the Berkeley School for the Deaf from 1879 to 1890.  He then attended the San Francisco School of Design and was awarded a scholarship to study at the Academy Julian in Paris. In addition to his talents as a highly accomplished artist it was his great personal appeal that attracted many friends and national celebrities from the arts; including the actor Charlie Chaplin; the writer Jack London; national folk hero, Buffalo Bill; and the composer, Ignacy Jan Paderewski. One of the foremost exponents of impressionism in California, he is internationally known for his landscapes of rolling hills of poppies and lupines as well as coastals, moonlit scenes and seascapes. Awards:  gold medal, School of Design;  medal, Louisiana Purchase Expo, 1904;  silver medal, Alaska-Yukon Expo, Seattle, 1909. Works Held:  Bancroft Library, UC Berkeley, California School for the Deaf, Fremont;  Laguna Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art;  New York City Museum;  Mills College Art Gallery;  Oakland Museum;  Stanford University Museum; Springville (Utah) Museum Art;  Irvine Museum;  de Young Museum.
