In Still Life with Roses, Kleitsch demonstrates his mastery of color. The painting is done in the loose, informal style, characteristic of his works after 1920. He no longer uses the precise application of paint, to render a realistic impression of the subject, which was so prevalent in his early paintings. Now, his works have a feeling of spontaneity. Kleitsch did not plan or design what he was going to paint, he simply picked up the brush and let his feelings flow onto the canvas.
Roses in a Glass Vase is a warm, colorful, indoor composition. The unique California light beams, penetrating the drapery coverings of the windows are unmistakable. The illumination radiates and brings to life, the texture and flowing lines of the rose petals. One does not simply see flowers in a vase, but instead, the artist has succeeded in capturing your attention and bringing you into the entire composition. The viewer can sense a symphony of color and motion
